Five of our Favourite Flowering Plants for April

April is such an exciting and busy month in the gardening; with spring in full swing, there’s so much new growth and vibrant colour appearing. To celebrate the garden springing back into life, we thought we’d share five of our favourite plants that are flowering right now. If you are in need of some ideas to help brighten up your garden, hopefully this provides some inspiration!

Botanical name: Lamprocapnos spectabilis

Common name: Bleeding heart

ree

Commonly known as Bleeding Heart, this deciduous perennial, originating from China, brings a refreshingly bright pop of pink to the garden.

Its unique heart-shaped flowers provide a stunning display that can last for around eight weeks!

This plant tolerates all soil types and, providing it is kept moist, will thrive in sun or partial shade.

Botanical name: Fritillaria meleagris

Common name: Snake’s head fritillary

ree

Out of all of the varieties of fritillary, the ‘snake’s head’ is our favourite. These bulbs produce delicate flower heads, in an intriguing purple pattern that resembles a snakeskin!

They are very hardy plants and are suited to all soil types; why not try growing them in a container to create a striking display on a patio.

Botanical name: Aubrieta

Common name: Aubretia

ree

It’s a sure sign of spring when these perennial alpine’s are in bloom. Commonly found in shades of pink and purple, they look remarkable when cascading freely down a garden wall! A sunny, well drained site is required, making them a perfect choice for a rockery.

Botanical name: Erysimum ‘Bowles’ Mauve’

Common name: Wallflower

ree

Commonly known as a wallflower, this perennial variety is a great addition to any garden; not only do they produce beautiful flowers, but they continue to bloom for many months! They tolerate most soils but enjoy a sunny spot, and will help to attract bees and butterflies to your garden.

Botanical name: Primula denticulata

Common name: Drumstick primula

ree

With so many species of primula to choose from, it’s hard to pick a favourite, but we love the drumstick primula. Their vibrant, pom-pom style flower heads create an impressive display, especially when planted in groups. They prefer moist conditions, and can even be a good option for bog gardens!
